Do Video Games Help Reduce Stress? Here's What the Research Says

After a long day of work or school, many of us instinctively boot up our favourite game to relax. Whether it’s jumping into a game like Animal Crossing, diving into a few games of Counter-Strike 2, or just exploring a story-driven game. Video games help many of us to wind down after a stressful day. But is this just escapism, or can video games actually be a useful tool to help reduce our stress? Today we will be exploring this connection and see if video games actually provide stress relief or not.

What is Stress?

Before we learn if video games provide stress relief lets go over what stress is and how it can affect us. So according to the World Health Organization stress is the state of worry or mental tension caused by a difficult situation. Stress is considered to be a natural human response that prompts us to address the challenges and threats within our lives. Stress affects us through our mind and body. Stress can be both good and bad. A little amount of stress can be good because it can help us perform our daily activities. But too much stress can be bad because it can cause physical and mental health problems. Also according to WHO, learning to cope with our stress can help us feel less overwhelmed and support our mental and physical well-being which is why it’s important for people to have their own method in reducing stress and today we will figure out if video games is one of those methods.

Do Video Games Provide Stress Relief?

Many people think of gaming just as entertainment and provide nothing else, but research actually suggests that gaming, especially those that are casual or immersive games can offer stress-relief benefits. This is proven by a study from 2021 published by JMIR Mental Health. Their study discovered that casual, action, and games that provide physical exertion were shown to reduce stress and anxiety across different age groups and even in short gaming sessions (Pallavicini et al., 2021). This study provides us with a basis that video games can help reduce stress from different genres of gaming as long as those games provide people with a mental break by absorbing their attention. Another study, published by Trends in Psychology in 2021 specifically compared a casual relaxing game called Flower with traditional meditation methods to see how video games compared in stress relief to the traditional methods we know. The results might be surprising to some, this study says that the group that played Flower and the meditation group experienced significant reduction across all stress indicators such as heart rate and blood pressure etc (Desai et al., 2021). This interesting study helps provide more evidence that video games can be a stress relief method but not only that it can help people who might want a more engaging alternative to the traditional relaxation techniques.

Conclusion

In conclusion, video games can be more than just entertainment, they help many people relieve their stress after work or school. Many different genres of video games can do this from calming casual games to immersive story driven ones, and can help reduce both mental and physical signs of stress. But it's important to play video games in moderation or it may become harmful.
